OSC 603 and following Salty dog, the type that is made of pressed salt. This is a cute scotty type, standing on his hind legs with his front paws on the basket. He has black eyes and nose, tongue hanging out. There was discussion of this type on the chat some time ago, and someone offered the information that these were originally made to hold perfumes. Nevertheless, they have found a place in salt collections, partly because it is so amusing that they are made of salt. This one is in fine condition. A cut in the front of the basket, part of the design, has a little bit of material loss at the base line, the only flaw I can find. (526)(9/19) |

Very unusual intaglio salt, clear glass base with gold backed fancifully framed image of a horse and rider, crown below the rearing horse. The gilt backing the design of the intaglio is in perfect condition, and the effect from the top is a greenish gold as shown in the photo. Theantiques dealer identified it as German, based upon the designs. The rim is heavily patterned metal covered inside and out with gilt. The figureon the inside are of castles and beasts, on the outside two rows of medallions with small images of beasts, castles and flowers. The dish is 3 3/4" x 3 1/4 at the flared outside rim. Height is 1". Condition is excellent, a few tarnish spots to the metal. (529)(9/19) |

Salt marked R&S Germany on the base, luster finish inside and out, gold rim and feet, large pink rose in the inside. The porcelain is eggshell thin, quite translucent, which lights up the interior in a lovely way. It is 3 1/8" wide, 1 1/4" tall. Might pass as a nut or salt as you wish. (533)(9/19) |

Old sterling silver pedestal salt. This salt is 3 1/4" across, 3" tall. It has a chased design band on inside and out around the bowl, classic panels down the bowl, and a bit of a spiral at the top of the foot. The rim is rolled. The bottom is marked Sterling. Cement filled base. I assume the base is actually filled with something like plaster, certainly not heavy enough to be cement in the sense of concrete. Condition is excellent. The black spot at the top of one in interior panel is reflection. Pretty in a classic fashion. (543)(9/19) |

Boda Vallien salt or small bowl. Vallien is an outstanding contemporary glass artist who has made glass for Kosta Boda and is also featured on a variety of glass sites. He has made larger bowl in this same color combination and shape, so this was probably made as a miniature. At 2-1/4" wide and 2" tall, it is perfect for an open salt. The glass is amber with deeper mottling of the same color and a rim or blue mottling in light blue glass. It sits on a small clear glass base which is fully marked Artists D. Vallien and the identification S8010. This is a lovely one-of-a-kind art glass piece. (547)(9/19) |

Adams deep cobalt jasperware salt bearing marks for Ontario, Canada. The interior is white glazed, and the unglazed base if fully marked Adams, Est. 1657, Tunstall England and an artist's mark S. 2-5/8" across at the rim, 1-5/8" tall. Perfect condition as made. Unusual and attractive antique china salt, cherub or child holding an oval basket on its arms and head. The piece is all white except for blue lines and brilliant colors on the applied floral decorations. These are delicate and in high relief. I don't know what it is with the little blue flowers, but as usual I find three small chips on their petals. The more delicate looking bits are perfect. Height is 4", bowl 2-1/2 x 3". The base is marked SPM. Here is a reference to the German manufacturer: Based in the same region as the real Königliches Porzellan Manfaktur (KPM), the factory mark of the Schumann's Porzellan Manufaktur (SPM) was near the same as this from its big neighbour. Till 1850 the initials "SPM" were added to the eagle-mark. In 1851 these initials were replaced by "FAS." The eagle mark is not present on this small recessed base, just the added number in blue under the glaze, 23. It's age is probably pre-1851. (560)(9/19) |

Wonderful figural condiment set. The dog sitting up so sweetly with his paws held politely is the mustard pot. There is a long handled spoon that goes into a slot in the back of his removable head. Two little baskets on each side are for salt and pepper or any dry condiments one wishes. There is one small curved spoon. All parts seem original. No damage of any sort. Height of the doggie is 4-1/2", width of the piece 4" at the tops of the baskets. Marked on the base Paul UX Occupied Japan. (561)(9/19) |

Heavy cut glass salt. The glass is thicker in the front lower side where two large ovals are cut with a sweeping U-shaped cut around them. The rest of the salt has long cuts from the rim to the base, which shows considerable wear. The bowl rings nicely, very finely made. Size is 3" wide, 2-1/2" tall at the highest point. No chips or wear except the appropriate shelf wear on the base. (564)(9/19) |

Cute double salt with yellow chick and two eggs on a green base. Too bad Easter is past. The base is marked H and a four digit number 7140, typical of German marks on china. It rocks a little on a base that is a bit higher in the middle. It is 5" wide, 3" to top of the chick's head. The eggs are 1-3/4" wide. (565)(9/19) |

Antique ruby or cranberry cut to clear salt. Heavy, 2-1/2" wide, 1-1/2" tall. The salt probably dates to about 1880. There is light chipping on some of the cuts all around the body, probably where it bumped neighboring piece on a shelf. People really did use these in the past. There is a very small chip on the rim. General appearance is great. On the base is a large multi-rayed star. (566)(9/19) |

H&J 4759 Heacock described them as German with 4 digit numbers, and I have a pair so marked. These however have a faint impressed shield with sword, the mark for the German maker Conte Boehme. The little boy is wearing a white shift or night shirt but has his white boots and top hat as well as a blue bow tie. The 5" long shell is pinted with shades of purple and blue, only the gilding on his branch and around the base showing some wear. The only flaw is a firing crack seen in the base on one side. It is shallow and doesn't go through to the base. The Conte Boehme mark is seen on one side of the base and indistinct letters or numbers on the other side. (572)(12/31) |

H&J 4760 Like the boy above, this salt has the faint impressed shield and sword, mark of the German company Conte Boehme. The little girl is also shown in full figure, matching white dress, white shoes and blue bow tying her bonnet. The 5" long shell is painted in shades of purple and blue, only the gilding on the branch and around the base showing some wear. The only flaw here is a smooth chip at the top of her bonnet. The photo in H&J shows a little dip at the top of her bonnet so a touch of paint might make a nice repair. I'll leave that to anyone who would like to do that. The Conte Boehme mark is seen on one side of the base and indistinct letters or numbers on the other side. (573)(12/31) |

Opalescent vaseline blown art glass salt in EPNS marked stand. The salt is in perfect condition, little if any wear to the silvering on the three-footed stand. The salt has vaseline rigaree around it holding it in the stand. The salt is 3" wide at the rim, 1-3/4" wide at the part that fits into the stand. The salt is a little less than 2" tall, and the stand reaches about 4-1/2" to its top. I don't see this exact salt in the OSC, but it is very like the vaseline salt pictured at Plate 143 if the rim were pulled out. The opalescent rim gives a lovely cloud-like look to the salt from a top view. The vaseline is a clear pastel green that photographed correctly, glows under black light. Very tiny pontil mark on the base, polished almost away. (574)(12/31) |

Charming little painted and gilded salt with curled feet. Typical of Bohemian pieces. The gilding on the feet shows some wear but all the gold and painted flowers on the bowl are in excellent condition. 2-5/8" wide, 1-1/4" tall. (575)(12/31) |

Murano swan salt in cranberry with gold flakes in clear glass wings and tail overlay, nect and head. Excellent condition. Rather fat swan, body nearly round or perhaps heart shaped, 3" long not measuring the tail, 2-3/4" wide. It appears to have been blown into a mold since the cranberry glass has a pattern of soft diamond-shaped dimples moving ever smaller into a flower-like pattern at the base where there is a pontil mark. Wonderful example for the lover of Murano glass or swans. (576)(12/31) |

Another vaseline opalescent salt, this on with clear vaseline feather tooled rim, opalescent ribbed body, and clear vaseline feather tooled feet. Smoothed pontil mark on the base. Glows under black light, beautiful color as shown. The work is skillful and there are no flaws or irregularities at all except for one spot on the shoulder of the body where there are a few little extra glass bumps, left there in the making. These can be felt with finger tips, only faintly visible to the eye. If you don't have any vaseline opalescent, you need this salt. It's 3-1/8" at feathered rim, 2-1/2" at widest point on body, 2" tall. Somewhat similar to OSC 163, top and 174, top. Undoubtedly English and rare. (577)(12/31) |

H&J 1104 Scarce This is a slightly different Three Little Pigs. The trough matches H&J but is painted green. Like the one described in H&J this one is 3" high to the top of the middle pig's head, but it's longer than one I have. The trough is 3" long and the pigs, ear tip to ear tip are 4". Condition is excellent, no chips to the vulnerable ear tips. The pigs have that lovely smug look, must have already eaten. The only flaw I can find are two small chips on the edge of the hollow base under the middle pig. They are less than 1/8" and invisible when the salt is seated. (578)(12/31) |
