Fostoria Open Salts

blue line

Much of the information on this page is from the book Fostoria: Its First Fifty Years by Hazel Marie Weatherman (1972), but because there were no catalogs prior to 1900 in the Fostoria files when the book was being researched, there were numerous open salts not mentioned or pictured and they were added by gathering the information from other sources to make this page as complete as possible. Not every pattern known to have an open salt had one pictured in the book. Most notable are the LOUISE and TUXEDO patterns. For our purposes, every Fostoria pattern except one, had a number but not necessarily a name. There will be some missing images while attempts are made to obtain them from various sources.

Another source was Fostoria Glass Volume 1 Pressed and Blown Glassware Book 1 by Henry J. Liebmann (1993). Mr Liebmann's sources were "a company log book, company catalogs, price lists, letters, and other authoritative documents." This accounts for most of the pattern lines where we only know an individual or table salt existed, and not the shape or any measurements. Mr. Leibmann's other publications, as well as all Fostoria collecting news can be found at The Fostoria Glass Society of America website.

Dates shown are approximate for the run of the entire pattern. Some pieces of a pattern may have been introduced later or discontinued earlier than the date shown. Not all of the pattern pieces were made in all the colors noted. For instance, 2449 HERMITAGE is known in Topaz (pale yellow) but so far, not in any of the other colors listed for that pattern. Please email me if you have or know where to find any missing images or additional colors so they may be added.

Because many different companies made individual salts that were closely copied, it is difficult if not impossible to say for sure which of the more common shapes were definitely made by particular companies. Catalog drawings did not include views of the bottom of the pieces so absolute attribution is not possible in all cases. Measurements given in catalogs are also not very clear. For purposes of measurements on these Fostoria pages, please see the abbreviations listed at the bottom, and the method of measuring used.

Whether just a coincidence or a planned program, the #88 DIAMOND MIRROR line seems to be the first named pattern and a line with more than just one basic piece. We already know that the #88 individual salt was the very first piece made, not something in the #1 line as one might expect, and the company officially opened for business in 1888. Line numbers before #88 were unnamed except for what the piece actually was, such as oil lamp, candleabra or blown tumbler. All the line numbers between #88 and #112 are again unnamed and pretty much only one piece again, a couple of them being individual salts. This is why we don't see any glass items that are the same pattern design as the #93 or #95 individual salt. There weren't any.

Fostoria also made numerous individual almond or "nut cups" as well as some sponge cups and other novelty items that may be found in open salt collections as individual or table salts. Because there are also a great number of those items, they are on a separate page that can be accessed HERE.

blue line

The very first piece of glass made at the brand new Fostoria Glass factory in 1887 was an open salt in the #88 Diamond Mirror pattern!

The date appears to be Dec. 15, 1887.

blue line

In the Leibmann book, there is a Celery Salt listed with no line number or pattern name. The only two other items with it are a Molasses Can and a Shaker with Metal Top. But the pattern looks like it could be a later design. Perhaps it was just unnamed in the document. A tiny sketch makes the salt look rather plain and round. It says the line was introduced in 1891 but no discontinued date was given.

Because many similar salts made by different companies, it's difficult to determine exactly which one was made by Fostoria. It should be noted there are several with square bowls but Fostoria's definitely has a round bowl per their catalog drawing. Following the dimensions given and the bevel lines in the catalog drawing (at the top edge but not on corners), it appears that this could be the Fostoria example. The bottom has a checkerboard appearance with rows of 11 by 11 squares. Another example with rows of 9 by 9 would also fit the measurements given.

Here is another open salt pattern that cannot be exclusively attributed to Fostoria. The measurements of the lone Fostoria example are not certain. There are also known English examples with a registration number mark on the inside bottom. There are many colors that are most likely all English. Also comes in various sizes and shapes (oval, rectangular) as well as polished and/or cut glass versions. Larger sizes may often be seen in silver plated holders.

The Leibmann book shows the #140 VIRGINIA and #140 FOSTER BLOCK patterns separately, but with less pieces in the FOSTER BLOCK line. It also says FOSTER BLOCK was discontinued in 1891. There is no mention of any salts at all in the FOSTER BLOCK line but this note was added for the sake of completeness.

It's possible that this was marketed as a nappy, berry bowl or some other condiment dish. Since this was a pattern where no catalog was in the Fostoria files, it's difficult to say for sure if a table salt was included. The size is right for a table salt, but many small bowls in the various patterns could fit the criteria.

This is probably the most well known Fostoria pattern, and judging by it's long run, also probably the most popular and prolific. Although an individual almond appeared in the original 1915 catalog, the individual salt was added later. It's not known how many years the salt was made, but certainly not through 1982. While some pieces were made in colors in 1925-27, it is doubtful that the individual salt or almond was made in any colors. None are known to open salt collectors at this time. The table salt was only produced in 1925 and is very scarce.

ABBREVIATION DEFINITION MEANING
D Diameter Round items measured across the center, using the largest dimension. For instance, a top rim may be smaller than bulging sides. The sides are the measurement used.
H Height From where it touches the table to the highest possible point.
L Length On items that are not round or square but rather oval or rectangular, this is the longest side.
PP Point to Point On items that are basically round, but multi-sided, these are always measured from point to point, being the longest possible measurement.
SQ Square On items that are square with the same measurement for length and width.
W Width On items that are not round or square but rather oval or rectangular, this is the widest point on the shortest side.

Correct

Incorrect
You can see how there would be conflicting measurements if items like the #1913 FLEMISH pattern were not consistently measured from point to point. Measuring point to point, it is 2-3/8" across. If measured from flat side to flat side it is only 2-1/16" across. Wherever PP is given in the measurements, it is measured from the two outermost points.
